Skoda's smallest car just got a lot cheaper

Priced from $31,990 drive-away nationwide, the Skoda Fabia Select becomes the second variant in the hatchback's lineup since the current generation debuted in 2022.

It's $7000 less expensive than the Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo, which is due for equipment tweaks in the near future, according to the carmaker.

It will also be among four Skoda models the Select badge will be applied to this year, with the Kamiq Select to arrive first in July, before the Scala and Karoq Select grades arrive in August.

One of the biggest changes between the two Fabias is under the bonnet, as the Select is powered by a turbocharged1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, producing 85kW of power and 200Nm of torque.

This is 25kW and 50Nm less than the 1.5-litre four-cylinder in the Fabia Monte Carlo.

Both engines, however, are mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. All Fabias are front-wheel drive.

The Fabia Select's exterior equipment list also features a number of revisions, including 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights and tail lights, as well as halogen fog lights.

Inside the cabin, there's now an 8.0-inch digital instrument cluster (down from 10.25 inches), a 8.25-inch infotainment touchscreen (down from 9.2 inches) which retains wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual USB-C ports, manual height-adjustable front seats (with lumbar support) and a leather-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel.

The Fabia Select also misses out on dual-zone climate control, reverting to manual cooling and heating controls.

As with the Monte Carlo, standard equipment includes power-folding mirrors with heating, keyless entry and start, rain-sensing wipers, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

The Fabia Select also retains a number of key safety features, including autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist detection, parking-speed AEB in drive and reverse, front and rear parking sensors, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring and driver fatigue monitoring.

While the Fabia Select is fitted with a cruise control system, it isn't the adaptive kind which can slow down and speed up depending on traffic conditions.

As with all new Skoda models sold in Australia, the Fabia is covered by a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty.

The Skoda Fabia Select is also available within the brand's guaranteed future value (GFV) programme from $81 per week, based on approved buyers placing a 20 per cent deposit and a 6.99 per annum finance rate across a 60-month (five-year) term with a 15,000km limit.

Australian deliveries of the Skoda Fabia Select are due to begin in August 2024.
