Unfortunately, Australia is the only developed country in the world where trachoma infections still exist.
The condition, which causes blindness, is particularly common in more remote locations, including in the Northern Territory.
In the hopes of ending the preventable disease, Junee Rotary Club has partnered with Nyirripi School in the Waripi community of the Northern Territory, 413km north-west of Alice Springs.
"We're making hygiene packs that will be freighted to Alice Springs and distributed at the end of January," said Rotary president Neil McKenzie.
"We've made about 60 [using] what's been donated by our community.
"It is embarrassing that in a country like Australia we're still having this problem [with trachoma]."
In other news:
The local push is part of a national campaign to end trachoma in Australia. Originally, Rotary Australia had a goal to eradicate the disease by 2020.
"Obviously that hasn't happened so this is a project that fits into what we're hoping to do, and it works inside COVID [restrictions] to effectively contribute to the world," Mr McKenzie said.
"Our club has only 14 members, but without their generosity and support we wouldn't have been able to achieve this great result."
Each pack has been assembled with a variety of hygiene products alongside information on the prevention of the disease.
The bags themselves have been made by Mr McKenzie's wife, Denise McKenzie, and will include two personal letters.
One letter has been written by Wiradjuri elder Aunty Mary Atkinson and the other is from a student at Junee's St Joseph's Primary School.
"We're trying to establish a relationship with the schools, so the St Joseph's students have each written a letter to another student in the Northern Territory," Mr McKenzie said.
"Hopefully it will be an ongoing connection."
