Junee Business and Trades has received a grant from the Foundation for Regional and Rural Renewal to create a 'Can Do Recycling Trailer.'

The trailer, inspired by the Wagga council's Community Cash 4 Cans trailer, can be borrowed by a community group to place at an event as a recycling bin, with the 10 cent refund on each can or bottle going back to the club.

Community liaison officer Nicholas Pyers said the idea allowed groups with little resources to raise funds from items that may otherwise have just ended up as litter.

"You get 10 cents per can or bottle, it doesn't seem much by itself but based on what we're seeing from the Wagga one, you can fit about 3000 cans in there, that's $300 for doing very little," he said.

"For some of our groups in town, $300 is a lot of money, it pays their annual insurance bill or at least half of it."

Mr Pyers said a nominal hire fee may be required to cover insurance and registration costs, but they were looking into securing sponsorship to allow community groups to use the trailer for free.

He said the idea was a strong example of how community groups could collaborate for the benefit of all.

"There's plenty of events and festivals where people have indicated they're happy for other groups to come along and bring the trailer in, so groups like the Scouts don't have to hold their own event, they can turn around to people like JBT with Christmas on Broadway, the Rhythm and Rail Festival, Illabo Motorsports Park when they've got speedway events ... they can take the trailer out and they can earn some money," he said.

Mr Pyers said they were hoping to have the trailer ready for launch at Christmas on Broadway, and it was likely to be available before that should community events go ahead in spring.
