On Monday, January 20 this year, police reported they attended two locations, one being at Danswans Lane, Marinna and the other at Pattersons Road, Harefield, after members of the public reported finding the sheep dead. Officers from Riverina Police District found the carcasses of 11 sheep which appeared to have been slaughtered for meat.
Detective Inspector Adrian Telfer said police were aware of similar incidents that happened at the same time last year near Cootamundra.
"That is certainly one link that we are exploring but with every investigation it is only as good as the information we have and that is why we are appealing to the public," he said.
With a number of stock thefts in the region recently, Acting Inspector at Wagga Police Station Steve Magnone said police couldn't link previous incidents to the sheep carcasses in question at this stage.
"The sheep's ear tags had been removed when found so they can't track them to see if they match those sheep that were stolen until further testing," he said.
Earlier this month police began investigations into the theft of 47 Dhone cross lambs from a property on Milvale Road in Temora sometime between January 13 and 16.
Previously, the theft of a hundred sheep from an Old Junee property along Crudens Lane was investigate by police, which Superintendent at Wagga Police Station Bob Noble said at the time to be a case of "the owner penned the sheep on Saturday and on Sunday morning they were discovered missing".
Police have commenced an investigation into the recent find of sheep carcasses and the Rural Crime Investigators have been notified.
Police urge witnesses or anyone with information to contact the Wagga Police Station on 6922 2599 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
