Junee Correctional Centre staff make up a valuable portion of the 10,000 correctional staff in NSW and 25,000 frontline officers across Australia recognised on National Corrections Day.

Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke said the day was a great opportunity to thank the region's correctional staff who play a vital role in the rehabilitation of inmates at Junee's facility as the overall safety of the community.

"[Corrections staff] should be commended for their bravery, dedication and commitment to their work, which largely goes unnoticed because it happens behind the walls of prisons or Community Corrections offices," she said.

Minister for Corrections Anthony Roberts said the We Are Family theme this year focuses on the camaraderie of Corrective Services NSW.

"Our corrections staff should be applauded for their ability to band together and support one another to resolve often challenging and volatile situations," he said.

"Every day they work together like one big family, to support one another and meet the challenges of the job.

"We saw this just recently during the bushfire emergency, as staff banded together to assist each other and their communities."

Staff across the state held morning teas and lunches, and raised funds for chosen charities including NSW Rural Fire Service, Australian Red Cross and the NSW Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service.

CSNSW commissioner Peter Severin praised staff for their dedication to their work and ongoing commitment to their communities.

"I'm proud to say our corrections staff are some of the worlds best," he said.

"Corrections is a tough environment and our staff are performing difficult work, which is mostly unseen by the rest of our community."

Corrective Services NSW employs custodial officers, security and intelligence officers, inmate services and programs staff, psychologists and parole officers.
