On January 4, when the Dunns Road bushfire spread through Batlow, a property leased by the Tumut-based senior constable was destroyed.

Officers from Riverina Police District come together to replace what was lost, donating enough furniture, whitegoods and electrical goods to fill a new property.

It is understood the home in Batlow was leased by the officer and his fiance, who both kept a number of horses on the lot. The horse are believed to have survived uninjured, despite the complete loss of the house.

The officer was patrolling surrounding areas at the time of the fire and was in the process of arresting a man for alleged looting offences.

"He wasn't able to take his property from his house, he was doing his policing duties in response to his community," said NSW police assistant commissioner Joe Cassar.

Acting detective inspector Phil Mulligan co-ordinated the donation response after hearing the officer had performed upwards of seven hours overtime ahead of the fire.

Time that could otherwise have been used in packing up his personal belongings.

"This young couple were couch surfing with friends, along with a number of police across the command [who] were living with friends whilst they'd been evacuated," Inspector Mulligan said.

"I realised [he] wasn't going back to his house after the evacuation order was lifted, he wasn't going back to his house when the electricity was turned back on because he had no house, he had no belongings."

Following the outpouring of support from colleagues, the couple have been able to secure another property and refurnish it to a livable standard.

"It certainly doesn't patch the big whole in their lives, but it does assist until they can get back up on their feet," assistant commissioner Cassar said.
