With Temora, Coolamon and Bland also on board, the councils are asking people to make space in their houses available to 'billet' bushfire evacuees, meaning the provision of free accommodation.

This could be provided in the form of a spare room, bed, or even yard space to pitch a tent or caravan.

Junee mayor Neil Smith said the town was already helping significantly to the cause and hoped the offers would continue to roll through.

"We are in the very fortunate position of being able to offer a relatively safe haven for people who have had to evacuate their homes," he said.

"I am very pleased and proud of the response by our Councillors and staff, so many who have been happy and willing, keen even, to be the first to put their names on a register of billet options.

"Half our Councillors have already signed up as well as a number of our staff."

The length of stay offered is optional, and to register call Junee Shire Council on 6924 8100. Your contact details will be passed on to the relevant coordinating authorities for distribution.

For those unable to offer housing, donations are also encouraged.

Donation boxes will be available at the Junee Junction Recreation and Aquatic Centre and Junee Shire Council for those wishing to make monetary donations to the Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund.

The fund will be channelled into disaster relief and recovery programmes. Donations will go direct to those that have suffered loss and/or are unable to return to live in their homes, as well as ongoing programmes in communities once they return to take care of their psychological welfare.
