Stewart James Hudson, 26, appeared via videolink in Wagga Local Court on Wednesday when he pleaded guilty to stalk or intimidate intending to cause fear and breaching an apprehended violence order.
Court documents state that Hudson's threats were made when he used phones in Junee Correctional Centre to call his partner between January 22 and 24 this year.
Five of those recorded calls, which were obtained by police under a warrant, involved Hudson repeatedly threatening to kill the victim. He also continually berated her.
"I'm going to kill you ... I'm gonna hit you with an axe," Hudson was recorded saying, according to court documents.
The charges were laid after a correctional centre staff member saw and heard Hudson making the threats.
The witness said "the calls were very disturbing".
In court on Wednesday, defence solicitor David Barron said his client did not mean what he said in those threats.
"But he certainly did say some inappropriate things," Mr Barron said.
He said there was a relationship breakdown between Hudson and his partner that led to alcohol and substance abuse.
"He has in the past suffered anxiety, panic attacks and paranoia - things he needs assistance with."
Mr Barron said Hudson has undertaken courses to address his anger management and alcohol and substance abuse while in custody.
"Now my client is free from substance abuse, he has his head sorted again," he said.
"It's his own doing, he did it to himself and he accepts that."
Magistrate Christopher Halburd said the matter was "incredibly serious" particularly the threats to kill her and to use an axe.
Mr Halburd reserved his judgement, saying he needed to consider the three-year jail sentence Hudson is currently serving.
"You've got a fairly complicated situation," he said.
"All of those things need to be thought about."
Mr Halburd also noted that an early guilty plea discount may not apply as Hudson initially pleaded not guilty in an earlier hearing.
Hudson is set to reappear in Wagga Local Court on October 22 to learn his fate.
