"During month of Ramadan it's a requirement for Muslims to do good works in the community that they live in, so our inmates here wanted to do something symbolic to their faith for the Junee community as a gesture of good will," Chaplain of Junee Correctional Centre Jericho Nyatoro said.

The prayer mat was donated by the Darussalam Islamic Book Store in Sydney on behalf of the inmates, and Mr Nyatoro said it was a valuable addition to the community.

"People of Islamic faith who pass by or who live in Junee and are at the library at prayer time will be able to use this mat and feel comfortable in practicing their faith," he said.

"For them, just seeing a symbol they identify with will mean a lot. I understand this - when I see African culture, symbols from my country like a simple picture of the Victoria Forest say, it just resonates with me so it will be the same comfort for them."
