After nearly 30 years of growing it, in August she will give up her metre-long hair to be made into a cancer wig.

"I'm pushing 60 years old, and frankly I'm sick of having it this long," she said.

"Someone told me that because it's never been dyed or permed that it'd be perfect for a wig for cancer patients, so I thought, 'why not do that then'."

Ms Heard had not set out to grow her hair for three decades.

"It just sort of happened because I was always tying it back," she said.

"I guess I didn't notice how long it was getting."

While she may struggle to get familiar with the face in the mirror, Ms Heard admits it will be a difficult transition for many around town, who have come to know her by her distinctive hair.

"People know me as 'Deb with the plait', they don't even know my last name," she said.

"It's always been that way, I'm just 'Deb with the plait'. I guess I'll be 'Deb without the plait', now."

In collaboration with Junee's Pink Ladies, Ms Heard is planning to make a soiree of the haircut, inviting the town and surrounds to come along and make a donation to the Cancer Council on August 17.

"We've all be touched by cancer," she said.

"For me, it's been cousins, aunties, my mother and lots of friends.

"Anyone who has had cancer and has lost their hair, is more than deserving of a wig, so I hope my hair helps someone."

Joining the event to provide some background ambiance will be Australian-country singer Texas Rose.

A long-term friend of Ms Heard, she estimates that the singer may have seen her with her long hair out "about twice in 30 years".

"She probably won't recognise me even though she'll be there when it comes off," she said.
