The 55-year-old was earlier this month imprisoned for at least six years for the manslaughter of his wife Karen, meaning with time already served, he could walk on parole in December 2023.

"We've had a lot of police members that have spoken to me about that sentence and their view that it was something that we should appeal," commissioner Graham Ashton told 3AW radio on Friday.

A decision on whether to lodge an appeal would be made by the public prosecutor, he added.

"We respect the decisions of the court and sometimes when you look behind these decisions, whilst on the surface they can seem strange, when you actually go into the detail of it and look at where the judge has made the decision, it usually often makes sense," Mr Ashton said.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has 28 days from the time of sentencing to lodge an appeal.

Ristevski pleaded guilty to manslaughter after the court deemed there was insufficient evidence to secure a murder conviction.

The killer hasn't revealed any details of how or why he killed his wife of almost three decades.

She was killed on June 29, 2016 at the family home and her decomposed body was found by chance eight months later between two logs in a national park on the outskirts of Melbourne.

Mr Ashton noted Ristevski had failed to co-operate with detectives during their investigation.

"We have had a number of police that have indicated their ... frustration with that amount (of jail time)," he said.

Mr Ashton said he would be keen to further investigate a possible legislated sentencing penalty for criminals who, for example, fail to say where the victim is.
