The Storm considered themselves lucky to escape with a 13-12 win over the Warriors in their Anzac Day NRL match, thanks to a 77th minute field goal by Brodie Croft.

Despite only losing once in seven rounds, the premiership heavyweights have been under the pump in recent matches courtesy of a slow start.

In their loss to the Sydney Roosters they were down 20-0 while they trailed the Warriors 8-0 midway through the first half.

They also lacked cohesion and the finishing prowess that has been a trademark of their play, although credit must go to some fierce Warriors defence.

"It wasn't the prettiest of wins but you take the two points when you get them," Smith said.

"We showed pretty good energy but were off in a couple of areas - particular our organisation in attack."

Smith said even before Croft's match-winner the young halfback had lined up on the wrong side of the field and he directed him back to have a field goal attempt.

Melbourne don't play again until Friday week against the Sharks and Smith said they needed to meet to ensure they were on the same page.

"We need to have quite a serious look at that and get the thoughts of everyone in the team of what was happening and the reasons for the way we played that way," he said.

"And we need to change the way we're starting these matches - the last four games we've had to come from behind and we've managed to win a few of them but against the Warriors I feel we were lucky to get the victory.

"We just can't afford to allow the opposition to start better than us and put points on us and make us work harder than we need to."

The competition's record-holder for points scored, Smith hasn't kicked the past two weeks due to adductor issue.

The 35-year-old said he'd likely resume the goal-kicking duties against the Sharks although had enjoyed using the time post tries to address the team and take a break.

"I'd much prefer to be goal-kicking and I see that as part of my job but it's been nice to get the opportunity to go back and talk with the players about what we've done well and things we need to work on.

"And even though goal-kicking isn't overly physical you need to be switched on to get those kicks so it's been good but I'd much rather be lining the kicks up."
