Junee's John Hunter has placed himself forward as an independent candidate in the upper house, to champion the rights of the rural and aged populations.
"My top priorities are healthcare and transport, especially for the aged. We need improved roads in rural areas, not super bypasses in the city," he said.
Focused on regional healthcare, transport services, public education and renewable energy, Mr Hunter has served as the regional president of the Australian United Pensioners Group for the past 18 months.
Joining the political race as an independent has afforded Mr Hunter the ability to promote the issues that are of greatest importance to his peers.
"There wasn't another party that I wanted to be involved with. I think we need an independent voice in the parliament," said the 69-year-old.
"The best place for me is in the upper house because everything eventually goes through there. I'd have a little more say in the upper house.
"The [Legislative] Council, like the Senate, is the area that keeps the people downstairs honest."
Having arrived in politics later than other candidates, Mr Hunter admits campaigning has proven an uphill battle.
"I don't think I quite realised how big it'd be. I'm not just running for the seat of Cootamundra, I'm running for the whole state."
