Junee’s own Elise Smith has qualified for the inaugural Riverina Academy Rugby League team.
The 25-year-old will be joined by fellow locals Ivy Merlehan and Emma Hickey, with the latter named as vice captain too.
The trio have played together with the Junee Diesels for about two years.
“They’re very talented ladies, it’s great to be playing with them,” Smith said.
The rest of the team will be made up of both Group 9 and Group 20 players. Qualification has sounded out a major goal in Smith’s life so far.
“Ever since I was little I’ve wanted to be in [full contact] league,” she said.
“It’s really exciting, this is bringing in full contact for women, instead of just league tag.
“Up until now there’s only ever been non-contact for women.”
Training has already begun with competitions and tournaments to kick off early next year.
Having now broken the sports world’s glass ceiling, Smith is hoping there will continue to be greater options for women.
