Following a few weeks selling raffle tickets the members raised $1000 in support of Junee’s CanAssist.
“I just got the call telling me to come down and collect the cheque. It was certainly a lovely surprise,” said Natalie Phillips.
Until six months ago, the almost-new bike was sitting in a police holding bay.
After the weekend’s raffle, it now has a new owner, Gary Martin of JJS Glass and Co. The $900 raised in the raffle, plus another $100 from the shed’s coffers went to CanAssist.
“We thought we could sell it, we could give it away, but we really wanted to find a way to put it to the best use for the most people,” said Men’s Shed member George Burgess.
Christmas is typically a busy time for volunteers in the organisation.
“We’d have to be the largest Junee-based charity giving funds straight to the community around us,” said Ms Phillips.
Each year, CanAssist raises in excess of $30,000 which is then distributed in entirety for the town’s medical needs. Right now there are 65 Junee families receiving CanAssist funding for medication and treatment.
“There’d be a lot more out there who are not receiving the help we can give,” said Ms Phillips.
Anyone in need should contact the medical centre.
