The 21-year-old male victim sustained stab wounds to his abdomen during an incident in Junee, where police attended around 4am on Tuesday.
He was taken to Wagga Base Hospital for surgery where he remains.
Wagga Police Detective Inspector Darren Cloake said “the victim as are some of his extended family members are still uncooperative with police”.
“There are no reasons at this stage, but we’re working on a number of hypotheses,” he said.
“We do have our suspicions as there’s been a lot of reported activities by neighbours about cars going to and from the area, as well as people attending at all parts of the night.”

Detective Inspector Cloake alleged that suspected illegal activities may be involved.
“Whether this victim has fallen foul of criminal elements or some other reasons, that’s yet to be determined,” he said.
Investigations into the incident continue.
“It’s still ongoing – there are further inquiries are being made today by detectives,” Detective Inspector Cloake said.
“Certainly we’ve got concerns that the level of violence [in this incident] is severe.”
A spokesperson for the Murrumbidgee Local Health District said the male victim remained in stable condition.
