Hosting a battle of the bands tournament at the Junee Hotel on October 20, the You Matter Day committee hopes to raise awareness for the invisible illnesses.
“Over time, I think [mental health] has become more of an issue,” said committee president Jade Bramble.
“Just generally all over the world, I’d say suicide has been increasing.”
For Ms Bramble, the fight has become uniquely personal.
“You Matter Day is important for me because I do it in memory of two people I’ve lost,” she said.
This is the third time the town has hosted the event, but the first time the fundraiser has included the battle of the bands.
With two weeks still to go, already six local bands have entered the competition that will light the night from six o’clock.
Each year mental health services journey to the town to host market stalls, and this year will be no exception there. In 2017, the day raised $4000 in support of mental health awareness, but this year the focus will be otherwise positioned.
“We’re not worried about how much we raise this time,” said Ms Bramble.
“It’s more about connecting community to support around mental health.”
