Held from September 29 until October 1, this year’s event formed the opening of the Southern NSW Triple Crown series.
Despite completing a flawless course in 80.26 seconds, the 25-year-old lost the senior grand prix to Tamworth rider Stephen Dingwell’s perfect 78.46.
But Mr McDermott and horse Elegance De La Charmille still took the the top position in the overall leaderboard.
If he can master the coming championships in Canberra and Willinga Park, Mr McDermott will receive the $50,000 triple crown.
“Hopefully he wins at Canberra, that will make it super exciting and really carry that excitement through to Willinga,” said Riverina Showjumping Club secretary Belinda McMahon.
“It’d make a fantastic story though, a complete fairytale if the big winner was a local rider. We’d love to say we produced the winning rider.”
