The Rotary Club of Young’s driver simulator demonstration ran through two modules on September 19 and 20.
In one, they drove at high speed while texting and in the other, they drove through the blurred vision of someone with blood alcohol level between 0.09 and 0.10 per cent.
“A lot of the students don’t even have their L’s yet, so this is an experience they just haven’t had,” said PDHPE teacher Anthony Stokes.
“They’re getting their licences at 16, which is about the same time they start to increase their mobile usage, so this is just so important to teach them to limit distractions when driving,” said he.
Junee police senior constables David Whiter and Mark Fitzgibbins also attended to perform mock breath tests on the students.
“They were a little nervous, but that’s alright,” said Senior Constable Whiter.
“They’ve had a dry run at it now, so when they’re out driving and they get pulled over for one they know what to expect.”
