“Being vigilant and seen around the town goes a long way to deterring criminal actions,” said Inspector Rob Vergano.

Driver apprehended

A 38-year-old Cootamundra man will front court after he was found to be driving with a suspended licence.

Around 10:30 on the morning of Friday September 7, police apprehended the driver on the Olympic Highway near Bethungra.

Operation Compliance

Over a 24 hour period on Wednesday 5 September, Riverina police focused on vehicle safety.

“We were watching for people not wearing seatbelts, unsecured loads, and drivers using mobile phones,” said Inspector Vergano.

At the allotted period, five drivers were fined for unsecured loads, and two for device distraction.

Poultry pilfery

Police are seeking community assistance in locating two missing chickens.

It is believed the birds were stolen from a property on Hanks Lane, Old Junee between 8-9am on Monday September 3.

Fire lit inside jail

A Junee jail inmate has had time added to his sentence after he lit a fire in his cell and assaulted a correctional officer. 

Eric Ngatuvai, 24, was serving time in segregation when he set off the smoke alarms by setting fire to his own clothes.

He then proceeded to spit on and headbutt officers when they attended his cell. 

NSW Fire and Rescue were called to secure the cell.

On Wednesday September 5, Ngatuvai appeared via video link before Wagga Local Court.

He was sentenced to 16 months’ jail for assaulting the correctional officer.

The Junee Correctional Centre dealt with the fire internally.
