Regional leaders from across Australia, including RDA Riverina’s CEO Rachel Whiting, met to network, collaborate and share experiences about best practice in regional development.
The forum was hosted by John McVeigh – Federal Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government.
Ms Whiting said the forum was an opportunity to highlight the issues and needs of the Riverina, particularly its workforce.
“It’s a main challenge in this region and we’re addressing it through skilled migration and programs such as RDA’s Country Change,” she said.
Also highlighted at the conference was the notion that solutions for each region vary.
“There was a report presented that highlighted what we already know – solutions for one region aren’t the same for another,” Ms Whiting said.

“It’s always great to talk directly with Minister McVeigh.
“He and his staff were very much available to the RDA during the conference – they were very receptive to hearing from us and our regions.”
Ms Whiting said they would continue to work “with our partners across all regions, including neighbouring RDA Murray and Central West, which we’ve got some projects going”.
The conference also had speakers from businesses, education, industries and the community.
Dr McVeigh said the event was a great opportunity for RDA committees to connect and share ideas on how to bring innovation and economic investment to regional Australia.
“These local champions have an active role in helping our regions harness their competitive advantage, seize on economic opportunities, drive investment and create jobs,” he said.
“The forum is about bringing these regional leaders together with experts, academics and government to discuss issues, share knowledge and build important collaborative networks to ensure our regions continue to thrive.”
Dr McVeigh said the theme of the forum – collaborating and networking to grow regional economies – highlighted the importance of regional partnerships to continue the growth of these strong and diverse regional communities.
“The Coalition Government is committed to the ongoing success and productivity of Australia’s regions,” he said.
