At about 2.45pm, a sedan and semi-trailer collided on the Olympic Highway near the railway underpass, closing both directions of traffic.
The four female occupants of the sedan were rushed to hospital.
“The four females sustained injuries and were taken immediately to hospital,” Inspector Rob Vergano said.
He said it appeared the semi-trailer may have veered onto the wrong side of the road, according to reports.
“It seems the truck driver realised the semi-trailer was too large to go through the underpass and he may have tried to stopped but veered onto the wrong side,” Inspector Vergano said.
Details of the injured occupants are unknown at this stage.
Traffic diversions were in place for about 40 minutes while emergency services attended.
Inspector Vergano said the truck driver was unhurt.
Investigations into the cause(s) and circumstances of the accident are continuing.
The semi-trailer has been grounded for inspections.
