It’ll be Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, slide, slide, slide on Friday, January 26 as the town pours into the Junee Recreation and Aquatic Centre to celebrate our national day.
We’re in for a sizzler with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting a top of 37 degrees in Junee.
But the heat’s nothing to sweat over with council offering free access to the pool from 7am-12pm.
6.30am
The party kicks off bright and early with registrations for the Jail Break Fun Run taken at the jail. Download a copy of the form ahead here.
The run follows a flat 3.2km course between the entry to the Junee Correctional Centre in Park Lane and the Junee Recreation and Aquatic Centre in Lorne Street, with prizes to be won supplied by GEO Group.
9.30am
The day’s ceremonies will be held at the Rec Centre from 9.30am, with awards for citizen of the year, young citizen of the year, volunteer team and junior sportsperson to be honoured before a cheering crowd of their family and friends.
From 9am the Junee Lions Club are providing a lamington tea and coffee brekkie at the Rec Centre for the runners.
But if you’re more of a savory tooth, a fundraising barbecue run by the Junee Fire Brigade will have all your sausage sanga needs sorted from 8am with proceeds going to Can Assist.
Last year, two new citizens gave their pledge on Australia Day in Junee but this year no requests for new Australians were received.
Warren Potent, champion rifle-shooter and Junee’s Australia Day ambassador will be in attendance as well as Cootamundra MP Steph Cooke, who’s participating in the Fun Run and will also be on deck to hand out awards.
“The Rec Centre is traditionally a big part of celebrations, everyone comes down to the pool,” Nicole Barton, Junee Shire Council business support officer for community and recreation said.
“With the temperature we’re expecting, it’s probably the best place in town to be!
“People are more than welcome to bring their own picnic down, use our barbecues and have a big family day.”
12-2pm
Slip through the midday sun with the slide open and rides free between 12 and 2pm!
1.30pm till late
For those who prefer their Australia Day celebrations served with a cold VB, Tash Higginson will play Friday afternoon from 1.30pm at the Junee Hotel.
And if you like your party loud and late, on the other side of the tracks at The Commercial have DJ MAYN playing from 8pm.
