Hockey Australia (HA) made the call after looking into allegations that Commens exhibited lewd behaviour in front of his players at the Rio Olympics.
HA president David Hatt said the national body would not condone misconduct.
“On behalf of the board of directors of Hockey Australia, I want to make clear that as an organisation, we take the on-field and off-field behaviour of our players, coaching staff and employees very seriously,” Mr Hatt said .
The firing came just one week before Commens’ contract was set to expire.
He had long-planned to step down in order to spend more time with his family.
