After Southcity failed to score a point against them a fortnight ago, and lost for the first time in doing so, Junee couldn’t find their way over the line in muddy conditions at Laurie Daley Oval.
The Tigers bounced out to an early lead after scoring twice in the first 17 minutes before Phil Latu’s try with 30 seconds left before the break gave the premiers a 16-0 lead.
The pattern continued in the second half with Damian Willis scoring in the last minute to cap off a 30-0 win.
The Diesels had a number of chances when they were camped on the Tigers’ line for consecutive sets but couldn’t find a way through.
Gundagai captain-coach James Smart was impressed with the defensive effort.
“It is something were are really priding ourselves on and even when we had a lead we felt comfortable with we still wanted to keep them scoreless,” Smart said.
"It is just their attitude.”
Smart said the team did some work trying to nullify Cameron Hands’ kicking game and it worked it great affect.
“That is a pretty big weapon of their, that kick in behind the line for guys like Pete Little and Daniel Foley chasing through so I thought we covered ourselves really well there,” he said.
Since their loss to Junee in round three, the Tigers have only conceded 12 points in six games.
The ability of Gundagai to handle the conditions went a long to coming away with another impressive victory.
With half Laurie Daley Oval covered in mud it was the Tigers who relished the heavy going.
“It was really slog, a real scrappy game, but you expect that in those conditions,” Smart said.
“We will definitely take that.”
Junee captain-coach Matt Hands, who played in the forwards, thought his team was simply outplayed.
“They were just better in most aspects,” Hands said.
“They are a very well coached side and just played smarter footy than us.
“They are probably a bigger side and that suits on days like that.
“It is hard to get a gauge on things in this sort of weather as it takes a few of our boys out of the game.”
The win moves then around Junee and into second place on the ladder on points for and against.
Junee are out to rebound against Cootamundra will Gundagai hosts Tumbarumba on Saturday.
