Some of those who had their name passed around already have plenty of work ahead of themselves though.
For people considering a run for council there is no requirement for having done that kind of work before, you don’t need to have led your own business, a farm or be seen to be a leader.
And better yet, there’s a few dollars and sandwiches at the end of the day for that effort.
One of the great advantages to living in this country is people can throw their name into a hat and have a go – contrary to popular belief, political correctness has not affected it.
Our glorious democracy is starved if people think they shouldn’t have a go.
While many people can suggest people who work hard, and would no doubt give it their all – the people making the suggestions could probably do just as good a job.
The mayor’s job is to lead and promote the shire, they’re not there working hard over a spreadsheet, or on a building site with a tape measure.
They set the direction, they don’t put it into practice. What better way to help shape the future of the community than through local government, which does a far superior job for its constituents than others.
