Hometown hero Laurie Daley was back in Junee for the announcement on Monday as the NRL and the state government came together to deliver $75,000 in funding for the upgrade.
The funds will see the construction of an amenities block at Laurie Daley Oval, as well as additional spectator seating and a walkway upgrade.
Daley said it is an exciting development for Junee.
“It’s great news,” Daley said.
“It’s a significant contribution and one that was needed to improve the facilities.
“It was great to get home, have a look at their plans to see what they’ve got and it will be great when it’s finished.
“It’s great for the Oval to get some new amenities that were desperately needed.”
At a time when Junee are set to hold a crisis meeting next week to find a club president, Daley urged the town’s rugby league supporters to get behind the Diesels.
“All Country Rugby League (CRL) clubs need as much support as possible and for people to get behind them,” he said.
“To have more people get involved and help the club would be good.
“As it is with all towns, everyone supports the teams but they need people to get in and help each other out.”
NRL general manager of game development Andrew Hill is thrilled to be able to contribute to the game at grassroots level.
“This local investment shows the NRL and NSW state government’s continued commitment to deliver improvements for grassroots rugby league clubs and in turn, nurture our stars of the future,” Hill said.
The grant came courtesy of the NSW Footy Facilities Fund, a, partnership of the NRL and NSW government that has provided mire than $2.2 million in funding over the past three years.
Gundagai is also a beneficiary of the funding with $75,000 to be used to upgrade Stan Crowe Oval, next to Anzac Park.
The money will be spent to construct a canteen, change rooms, a spectator viewing area, disabled facilities and storage space.
As part of the announcement at Junee on Monday, Daley took local kids for an hour-long free junior clinic at Laurie Daley Oval and that was very well received by the youngsters.
