The matter has now become a critical incident in which all circumstances surrounding the incident will be investigated.
It will then be subject to an independent review.
The man surrendered to police at 8.40am Wednesday when he climbed into a window to waiting police negotiators, who had kept a vigil near him since the stand-off began on Tuesday about 10am.
Police confirmed he was shot with a “bean bag round” during the stand-off.
He was arrested shortly after the siege ended.
After being treated by paramedics at the scene, the man was transported to hospital for assessment with initial reports pointing to dehydration.
The Daily Advertiser has since been told doctors performed surgery on his spleen, which was damaged from the bean bag round.
A spokeswoman for Wagga Wagga Rural Referral Hospital said the man is now in a serious but stable condition.
The man has a history of family tragedy and is known to police.
