When his brother Travis approached him on Sunday with the news that he’d signed on to coach at Wagga United, his choice became a no-brainer.
After weeks of pondering his future, Weir is thrilled to have sealed his fate while reuniting with his brother at his old club.
“It’s going to be great to be back with Trav,” he said.
“I didn’t even know he was applying to coach United so it actually caught me off guard when he told me.
“But it helped me make my decision and I’m looking forward to it.”
This season may be Weir’s last, but after enjoying a standout campaign with Junee which saw him lead the goal scoring, the veteran said he would approach his playing future on a year-by-year basis.
“I said to Trav I’d help him out at least for one year,” he said.
“Because last season was such a good one for me personally, I’ll see how things go this season and if all goes well, I could end up playing another year after that.”
Weir said he was likely to slot in at centre back but added he was happy to play anywhere, and said he would have no issues with taking orders from his brother.
“I’ll play wherever Trav wants me to play,” he said.
“We have a similar coaching style so that helps us to be on the same page.
“He taught me a lot growing up and I have a lot of respect for him.”
Weir’s departure is a painful one for Junee, a club which struggled even with their standout coach putting the team on his shoulders and working furiously to keep the ship afloat.
But the passionate leader had nothing but good things to say about the Jaguars following his departure.
“I can’t thank them enough for the opportunity they gave me,” he said.
“I made a lot of good friends there.
“It was a shame we couldn’t utilise what we had there and that was because we had so many guys backing up to play two games each week.”
The Jaguars have also lost veteran defender Adrian Weir to retirement.
Teenager Harrison Weir is expected to move on and goalkeeper Jordan Orr has departed to begin a career in the military.
But Junee did at least get one last vintage Lincoln Weir performance in the season finale.
Weir signed off with a stunning four-goal haul, against Wagga United of all teams, to round out a largely winless season with an emphatic 5-1 victory.
