The NSW government has indicated the Junee area will be allocated at least $1.5 million, to be distributed for projects that improve residents’ lives over the next two years.
Upgrades to the Athenium’s air conditioning, Illabo showground and Laurie Daley Oval amenities have been identified as top priorities for an injection of funds.
“It really is a very rare opportunity to make a difference with such significant funds,” mayor Neil Smith said.
Council received nine “very worthy” applications for funding from around the shire, undertaking a multi-criteria assessment of each to determine priority.
Applications were assessed based on their fit to funding project criteria and Junee’s community strategic plan, as well as sustainability, community benefit and councillor preference.
“As soon as we found out about the funding we advertised the opportunity, held an information night and staff attended in rural areas at the request of community groups to distribute information, council general manager James Davis said.
Cr Smith said the allocation of preferences was a very structured process and councillors were very happy with the result.
All nine applications will be submitted to the state government for consideration, who will undertake their own assessment, including surveying for community preference.
The funds will be allocated in two rounds of at least $750,000.
“Any projects that miss out will get another chance,” Cr Smith said.
Council has until October 14 to submit the applications, which total $2.6 million, with a government decision likely to be made between December and February.
