Now a determined group of locals are trying to bring it back from the ground up, starting with some tiny tykes.
Junee’s Aussie Hoops program, an eight-week skills course for primary school kids, will hold its registration day on Tuesday from 5.30pm.
Committee member Sonia Nathan said there’s growing interest in reinvigorating a competition, and they hope the kids’ program snowballs into something bigger.
“I’ve played basketball all of my life because it was the big sport in town,” Ms Nathan said.
There will be a lot of people who remember playing as a kid and hopefully bring their own kids along to have a go.

“There will be a lot of people who remember playing as a kid and hopefully bring their own kids along to have a go.”
It’s a huge project, with an association having to be built from scratch including constitutions, committee members and funding.
Kids and their parents are invited to have a go and enjoy a sausage sizzle on Tuesday afternoon.
The registration price of $50 per child includes a welcome pack with a singlet, basketball and backpack.
