Following analysis of forage, blood and urine samples from 16 farms across four states, a potential link has been identified between the higher calcium and magnesium status of ewes and improved lamb survival.

Researcher Dr Shawn McGrath said survival rates are a “reasonably big issue” for farmers. Industry benchmarks suggest 70-80 per cent of twin-born lambs live to marking. 

A study across five farms is currently underway. If results demonstrate supplements boost survival it represents a quick and easy way to strengthen flocks.

“It’s a very easy thing for farmers to be able to put out supplements,” Dr McGrath said.
