Fresh from winning this year’s major pairs championship with Brett Fanning, Smith went in with plenty of confidence.
Minister went after winning his maiden zone president reserve singles title the weekend before and started well leading 3-1 early.
Smith strung together eight consecutive shots to take a solid 9-3 lead before Minister rallied, and rain interrupted play, Smith was leading 10 -7. After short delays the margin was still three with Smith leading 14-11. Both were playing well, but Smith had the big shots when needed and extended his lead to seven, 23-16. With the finish line in sight Smith laid on the pressure with strong draw bowling and with the score at 29-18, Minister was facing an uphill battle to stay in the contest.
Minister did manage another two shots, before Smith closed out the contest to win the jewel in the JBC Championship crown and Smith’s maiden major singles title.
