Representing NSW in a State of Origin themed craft beer competition at Sydney’s Quarrymans Hotel on Wednesday, Merchant Brewing co-founders Josh Allen, Dan Taylor and Glenn Garlick unveiled their secret weapon.

Tasked with pitching three craft beers against a trifecta of beverages from Queensland pub White Lies Brewing, Merchant Brewing’s one-off Junee Lager creation propelled them to victory. 

Co-founder Josh Allen said it was the beer’s simplicity and drinkability which won them the competition. 

“A lot of craft beers are very hoppy and infused and whatnot, but this was the most simple beer of the evening,” he said.

“We wanted to make it that way because it was Origin night and people just want an easy drinking lager when they’re watching the footy.”

Al three of the brewery’s founders played junior rugby league in Junee and Garlick was teammates with current Salford Red Devils captain Michael Dobson from under sevens to under 15s.

Mr Allen said it was a thrill to pay homage to his hometown with a dedicated beer at the same time as Junee’s own Laurie Daley was leading NSW into battle.

“Even though we’re a Sydney-based company, we’re proud to be from Junee and want to tell the world that's where we come from.”

Allen said the Riverina - which boasts a range of breweries including Thirsty Crow, Batlow Cider, Yenda’s Australian Brewing Co and Tumut River Brewing Co - was continuing to emerge as a brewing hotspot.

“I think it’s only going to continue growing and getting better,” he said.

“So many of the small towns around the region seem to have their own unique breweries now and the locals really get behind them.”
