Families and businesses will soon be on a level playing field to those in bigger cities with South Western Wireless’ fixed wireless service now available throughout the shire.
Junee resident and preschool director Rebecca Hart said she’d had nothing but trouble with her ADSL connection at work and would strongly consider the alternative service.
“Our internet is terrible,” she said. “Some days we fight with it all day long and that means we’re spending less time with the children.
“We’d certainly be willing to consider other options.”
CWA Junee secretary Gemma Marshall was quick to echo Ms Hart’s sentiment.
“My internet drops out quite often and a lot of people seem to be having problems,” she said.
“People in Junee should have access to the same services those in the city.”
The new service’s standard residential offering boasts a download speed of 20 megabits per second (mbps), while the company claims businesses will be able to access speeds of up to 100 mbps for both downloads and uploads.
South Western Wireless says it will provide reliable speeds regardless of location, while Junee’s existing ADSL customers experience speeds which vary greatly depending on the distance between their residence and the exchange.
Customers within one kilometre from the exchange are theoretically able to enjoy speeds of 25 Mbps, while customers just four kilometres further away are likely to receive just two mbps, which is not fast enough to stream Netflix in standard definition.
South Western Wireless national sales and marketing manager Ian MacLaughlan said the company would give an ironclad guarantee that the service would be up to scratch.
“We’re providing what’s called a service level agreement which is a guarantee that the service will maintain the advertised speed, and we’ll stand by it,” he said.
South Western Wireless’ announcement coincides with the ongoing installation of the NBN.
More than 570 homes and businesses in and around Junee currently have access to a retail service on NBN’s fixed wireless network, with a further 1700 properties to have access in October.
