The 54-year-old Junee woman was located in her home town, following a “dangerous” voyage from Wagga, early Wednesday morning.
The reckless journey cost the woman her license and a future court appearance but Wagga police say it could have cost her life.
Officers were called to Byrnes Rd after 2.45am, following reports a car had driven off the road. When they arrived the vehicle was nowhere to be seen.
The “well intoxicated” driver was later located and pulled over on Lorne Street in Junee, where a breath test revealed she was “well over the limit”.
“She was quite abusive towards police at the time,” Inspector McLay said.
“She was taken to Junee Police Station where she returned a breath analysis of 0.232 per cent.”
Inspector McLay said arrests for high-range drink driving were fairly rare and very concerning.
“This very well could have resulted in a tragic accident,” he said.
“It’s a concern people think it’s okay to get behind the wheel after they have been drinking.”
The incident comes after a young Wagga woman was last week arrested for drink-driving twice in one hour.
Inspector McLay said despite the best efforts of Wagga police, the act of driving while intoxicated would “never be eradicated” and he advised Riverina residents to be cautious.
“The three-standard-drinks rule doesn’t take into account a lot of different factors,” he said.
“Be careful.”
