Team entered from most parts of the compass. Riverina, Central West, Canberra and Sydney were represented under difficult conditions in particular Wednesday's thunder storm that saw all players diving for cover and a forced break just before lunch.
With the first game abandoned, the tournament started with Game 2 after lunch with defending champions Chris Cooney and David Inglis playing locals Brett Fanning and Sean Smith. In a match for the ages, both team playing beautiful bowls with the match going down to the wire, but the defending champions were just too good on the day winning 10-8.
In an all Junee affair Gary Ferrario and Martin Holmes dominated their opponents Jack Cousley and Robert Minister winning very comfortably 17-2.
In game three Ferrario and Holmes were on the end of a punishing fifteen shot defeat against the Blakehurst duo of Jones and Larry. Also having a convincing third round victory was the Robertson team from Temora Rec Club beating Snakey from Wagga RSL.
So after Day 1 of the Classic Pairs, Jones from Blakehurst lead the tournament with 2 wins +26 from Robertson of Temora Recreation Club on 2 wins +17.
Day 2 conditions were a little better but light rain persisted throughout the day.
Tournament leaders Jones played Fanning in another close match with both teams leading at stages in the match, the game went down to the final end with Jones winning 10-9.
Dennis from the Rules Club won their third consecutive match beating Snakey from Wagga RSL, 13-10 and taking second spot from Robertson after four games, local players Jeff Chisholm and Ian Cooper were making their move on 3W + 13 & Billy Seton and Martin Cousley were in the hunt on 3W + 10.
Game 5 sorted the men from the boys, with only two unbeaten remaining after the round. Local lads Billy Seton and Martin Cousley lead the pack with 4W + 16 and the defending champions of Cooney and Inglis were lurking in second place only behind on margins with 4W + 9.
In the final match of the tournament Cousley (Junee) played Brookes (Rules) and Cooney (RSL) played Jones of Blakehurst and it was not the result the locals were looking for losing big to Brookes 21-8.
For Inglis and Cooney a win would make them the champions again in 2017 and in playing Jones of Blakehurst who were leading the tournament after day one would like nothing more than to torpedo the defending champions. It was not to be with Cooney and Inglis winning the match, the day and the tournament with a 13-8 victory.
