After frantically searching for a goalkeeper all off-season, it was only once Jaguars coach Lincoln Weir conceded defeat that the perfect candidate fell into his lap.
Looking for ways to enjoy himself before enlisting in the army later this year, Orr stunned an unsuspecting Weir when he made a surprise appearance at training this month, volunteering himself for the job at the last minute.
It will be the first time the 22-year-old has seen competitive action in five years, last playing for the Jaguars’ second grade side as a fresh-faced teenager before switching his focus to refereeing.
Despite the long layoff, Orr has backed himself to perform at Pascoe Cup level.
“I’m pretty confident,” he said.
“We’ve had hit-outs within the club and everything has felt really good.
“My confidence wasn’t all that high during my first training, but once I kept a few balls out, that confidence really started to pick up.”
Coach Lincoln Weir said he was over the moon with his latest recruit.
“I’m really excited about him, he’s been terrific from what I’ve seen so far,” Weir said.
“He certainly hasn't lost his touch.
“He’s not the biggest player, but he seems to really monster the goal, making himself stand big in goal.”
The Jaguars coach said Orr’s addition would have a positive ripple effect throughout the side.
“It really takes pressure off us, now that Adrian and I don't have to worry about playing in goals,” he said.
“It’s gets us back onto the pitch, meaning we'll have a much stronger outfit on the field.”
Orr hopes to see out the season before being recruited to the defence force later in the year.
The Pascoe Cup schedule is yet to be released, despite the season being expected to start in approximately two weeks.
