Every house throughout Junee’s residential and rural-residential area will be delivered a new food and organics bin next month.
The first collection will occur on February 9.
The bins are strictly designed for the disposal of biodegradable materials such as fruit and vegetable scraps, lawn clippings and newspapers.
Contamination from glass, ceramics and non-biodegradable bin liners would result in the cost of the service become prohibitive, or the composted material being condemned to landfill, according to Junee Shire Council.
Councilor Robin Asmus said the service provided numerous benefits.
“We will firstly be able to increase the lifespan of our shire and regional landfills and reduce costs associated with operating these,” Cr Asmus said.
“Secondly, it will enable us to use this compost to keep our parks beautiful, and re-establish grass more quickly after street works and the like.”
The Food and Organics bin will be collected fortnightly on Thursday mornings and will alternate weeks with the current recycling service.
