It’s the people who make towns like this one special.
Particularly those who dedicate their lives to serving Junee, those who care deeply about the town and wanted to see it not only survive, but thrive.
Junee is where it is today because of these kinds of people.
People like Brian Higginson.
Mr Higginson left Junee High School to join the workforce in Wagga in 1974.
But six months later, when news broke that his father has passed, Mr Higginson considered it his duty to serve Junee by continuing to run the family business, Higginson’s Drive-In Farm.
It was one of the Junee’s most important businesses, and Mr Higginson not only wanted to honour his father, he wanted to see the town do well.
Home was where his heart was.
43 years after returning to work at his family business – now AGnVET – he leaves as a beloved staple of the Junee community, just like his father was.
His impact on the town is immense and impossible quantify.
Colleagues and customers alike rave about the kind and understanding face that had greeted them at the Lisgar Street premises over the past four decades.
Just by lending an ear, cracking a smile and showing folks he cared, he would make someone’s day on a regular basis.
AGnVET became more than just an outlet for agricultural supplies.
It became a place where farmers knew they would also receive a sympathetic ear during tough times, thanks to a caring culture fostered by Mr Higginson.
It’s the people you meet over the journey that makes life worthwhile, and few will forget the days they crossed paths with Mr Higginson.
It’s been a long, memorable ride, but the time has come for one of Junee’s most recognisable faces to embark on his next chapter.
Whether its gardening, spending time with family or catching fish large enough to land him on the front page of The Daily Advertiser, Brian Higginson will spend his retirement the same way he spent his working life: doing what he loves.
