Bert Higginson was the beloved long-time owner of Higginson’s Drive-In Farm – now AGnVET – and it was at the moment of his passing that Mr Higginson knew he was destined to follow in his father’s footsteps.

An emotional Mr Higginson announced his retirement earlier this month, working his final day at the well-known Lisgar Street premises last Friday after more than four decades on the job.

“It’s been a massive decision to make, a lot of sleepless nights,” he said.

“It’s going to be hard to leave, I can tell you that.

“But it’s been a great journey and I wouldn't change a thing.”

Mr Higginson said it was the people around him, both colleagues and customers, who had fuelled his undying love for the job. 

He stepped down as manager to take up a customer service role in 2010 in order to spend more time with those people face-to-face. 

“I’ve had such brilliant people to work alongside, they’re very special and have made my days so enjoyable,” he said.

“I can remember my relationships with all of my clients too, they’re unique characters and the conversations we shared during the droughts and the fire will always stick with me.

“You build so many relationships in this place, and they aren’t just something you build overnight.”

AGnVET managing director Mark Giffin said it had been a joy to work with Mr Higginson.

“Brian is a tremendous bloke, he’s always full of energy with a smile on his face,” Mr Giffin said.

“He just has a great feeling for people and goes above and beyond to make sure everyone feels comfortable, looked after and included.

“He has been an absolute asset to our business, just as much as he has been to the Junee community.” 

Mr Higginson said he looked forward to spending his retirement fishing, gardening, renovating, and most importantly, spending time with his family. 

“My wife sacrificed a lot while I was working here and it’s about time I paid her back,” he said.
