Junee’s groundbreaking 2-1 victory over Henwood Park Hawks ended the minor premiers’ season-long winning streak.
At the end of the match, Jaguars supporters celebrated triumphantly, outnumbered on the sidelines, but strong in spirit.
Junee’s attacking players were strategic in front of goals.
Knowing how challenging it is to score a goal along the ground against Henwood Park keeper Danika Sadleir, they chipped the ball in the air, and had more success than any other team in 2016.
After immense forward pressure, Junee’s Ash Goode capitalised 13 minutes in, off a corner-kick from Elisha Ward.
Henwood Park striker Charlee McPherson replied with a clinical free-kick, popping the ball into the top left-hand corner of goals.
At half-time, teams were drawn 1-1.
Junee built towards goal, as left-back Suzanne Waia worked with winger Abby Foley and midfielder Nicole Tinnock to maintain possession and put the Hawks in a vulnerable position.
Junee soon capitalised, bringing the score to 2-1.
A number of Hawks’ chances went begging as McPherson was caught offside five times 15 minutes into the second half.
Hawks’ coach Rod Buik swapped attacking midfielder Danielle Plummer into centre forward, minimising the amount of offside calls, but Junee’s keeper Sara Smart barely missed a beat.
True to her name, Smart judged the play, and attacked the ball, beating Plummer and McPherson to the punch.
Smart copped a number of hard, physical tackles without complaint, and continued to play confidently throughout the match.
Junee sweeper Steph Puttock used her fitness, knowledge of the game and skill to divert Hawks strikers on their way towards goal.
Henwood Park missed dangerous striker Rachel Trenaman, Nat Kozack and centre back Steph Armstrong.
However, defender Hannah Schultz fitted into Armstrong’s position; a stand-out on Sunday. Schultz’s decisive communication, accuracy and skill prevented the score from blowing out.
Meantime, fourth-placed South Wagga defeated fifth-placed Wagga United 5-1 at Rawlings Park on Sunday.
Tolland and Lake Albert’s game was deferred to Tuesday at 6.30pm, as a decimated Lake Albert didn’t field a team. Third-placed Tolland will trade places with second-placed if the squad defeats Lake Albert by more than eight goals.
