It’s how NSW Governor David Hurley described the Country Women’s Association at their annual conference.

It’s a comment on the mark.

Junee’s CWA branch might not be one of the largest getting around, they are more than capable of doing their part in changing our society.

Often when they get behind a cause, it’s not very long before that problem or situation are improved.

They’ve already taken the first step with a public forum sharing the most vital of commodities: information.

As the panel said, domestic violence is not just raising a hand, it is much more than that.

It can verbal, social and economic.

Junee does not need the headlines that echoed around Australia following the brutal killing of Luke Batty on a sports-field. 

The forum last week should be the first step in the community doing their part to make sure that evil is repeated in our shire.

Ending domestic violence is not going to a simple, due to its very nature, it is challenging to escape or even to realise that someone is trapped in it.

We as a community can only help people realise and make the change, and once the decision is made, supporting those people who have made the decision is our responsibility.

It’s not just the people of Junee shire who can help, the government can do their part, and there is more than can be done.

More funding for women’s health centres, emergency accommodation and ensuring service providers have the funds would be just the start.

In NSW, the state government has strengthened the law to combat domestic violence.

At the end of the day, the decision to escape domestic violence comes down to the person who is experiencing that violence.

It also comes to down to the community to make the decision of people escaping the violence easy to live with.

The work of Junee’s CWA branch is to applauded and more work needs to follow it to ensure the hidden scourge of domestic violence is stamped out.
