When it comes to fuel prices, there’s no consistent method of working out how retailers come to that price as everyone does it differently.
What did change was instead of drivers flying off to Wagga to fill up, they kept more of their dollars locally.
It’s now up to United to show they’re genuine and deliver on their promise.
Unfortunately, unlike politicians which can be voted out – United is a private business.
The business must demonstrate it can be be trusted to deliver fuel which is reliable and competitive on cost, but that they also care about their investment in Junee.
Junee does not need another empty shop, particularly in such a prominent space.
Everyone who drives a car – which are the majority of adults in Junee, needs petrol – where they get it is up to each person so it’s not like it’s a market with no customers.
The real advantage of having cheap fuel in Junee isn’t necessarily relief for the hip-pocket, but it means there is one less incentive for people to travel to Wagga. If you’re headed to the city, for something it’s easy enough to buy fuel, groceries and whatever else.
United can play a part in keeping people in Junee and supporting local businesses by simply adding a bit of extra competition to the market.
Clarity is required
Inland Rail waltzed into Illabo this week in a bid to reassure landholders that there was a plan.
The plan is remarkably short on detail though.
There is a two-kilometre ribbon running out of Illabo and all the way to Stockinbingal, the project will eventually use 40 metres of that space within those two kilometres.
So, the only certainty farmers received is that there is no real certainty.
The project is of national significance and let’s be honest – it’s getting a bit late to get on with this.
The real problem of course is the federal government still has to deliver the money that will build this massive project and of course, it will take at least decade.
And such a timeline would still be dependent on both the weather and budget holding up.
