There have been reports of contractors saying the SES has sent them asking for money.
NSW SES Murrumbidgee regional controller David Buchtmann said residents should be wary of scammers trying to take advantage of people already in distress.
“We haven’t been told of any scams in the Riverina area, but it has happened in other areas,” Mr Buchtmann said.
“The SES does not solicit money off property owners when it has been called to assist the community.”
There is a legitimate association that raises money for SES volunteers and units to provide additional grants and equipment – the NSW SES Volunteers Association.
If anyone was concerned that they were being targeted by scammers, they could contact the police, the SES on 132 500, or contact Scamwatch on 1300 795 995.
