After representing Australia in international competition between 2006 and 2008, she has started a charity called Shoes for Planet Earth providing unwanted running shoes to people in need.
“It encourages people to be active which makes a further difference,” Ms Kartsounis said.
“They’re for anybody in need, homeless people, flood victims, fire victims or people with nothing.
“It gives them a means to run and with runners you can do anything, walk, run or work.”
After speaking in Junee as the town’s Australia Day Ambassador Ms Kartsounis was presented with a pair of custom shoes from mayor Neil Smith.
People with a spare pair of clean runners, with good soles tied together, can drop them off at Active Foot Clinic Podiartry in Wagga.
Ms Kartsounis said any shoes donated would be used locally, not around other parts of the country.
