He's fond of making amateur videos of his pet cats and swearing at satirical protesters dressed in medieval costumes.

Now, libertarian senator David Leyonhjelm has taken to singing in the Senate chamber on government bills.

The Liberal Democrat on Wednesday delivered a less than rousing rendition of the 12 Days of Christmas, renamed the "Five Tax Bills of Christmas".

"The government has been hitting home runs on tax reform all year. There have been five – count them – five tax and superannuation laws amendment bills," Senator Leyonhjelm told the chamber before his musical review of bills on changes to fringe benefits tax and capital gains tax, among others.

"I think Senator Leyonhjelm has guaranteed himself a run in the electronic media," manager of government business in the Senate Mitch Fifield said after the performance.

It's not the first time a senator has turned to the creative arts to make a point in the chamber.

In 2011, Liberal senator Mary Jo Fisher danced the hokey pokey and time warp for another parody on tax – Labor's carbon tax.

The tax and the fortunes of South Australian town Whyalla also inspired former trade minister Craig Emerson to burst into song, with a reworking the Skyhooks' Horror Movie.
