The rookie pairing of Nathan Charlton and Craig Shaw overcame a spirited fightback by fellow rookie Billy Seton and veteran John Puttock to be victorious by the score of 16 to 14.
In their first season of championship bowls both Charlton and Shaw have shown how skill above their years in claiming the minor pairs title.
Played over 21 ends, Charlton and Shaw got the jump on Seton and Puttock early, by winning six of the first eight ends, to lead by a healthy six shots.
They then increased their margin to nine shots to lead 15 to 6 with six ends to play.
Nine shots in arrears and running out of chances quickly, Seton and Puttock needed a change of fortunes quickly if they had any chance of winning the title.
In the next end they managed to turn the tide.
They picked up five shots in the next three ends to close the gap to a manageable four shots with three ends to play.
Charlton and Shaw seeing their lead shrink in half, found some respite in winning the 19th end and putting the breaks on the charge by their opponents.
With two ends to play and a sizeable five shots behind, securing the victory was was going to be a struggle for Seton and Puttock.
They didn’t let the size of the challenge intimidate them and to their credit they managed to salvage three shots from those final two ends to fall short by only two shots at the end of the match.
On Sunday Junee Bowling Club will host their biennel President’s Day.
