While they didn’t bring home the premiership trophy for Southern Inland Rugby Union’s third grade, they played an incredible season.
“It’s a tough competition,” club president Anthony “Tubby” Fitzgerald said.
“We’re looking forward to another strong season next year.”
The Rams didn’t start 2015 off well, going down to CSU and injuries claimed a number of players for the season.
A partnership with the Cootamundra Tricolours meant the Junee team only ended up with one home game at Loftus Oval all season.
Despite the challenges, the Rams pulled together during the second half and secured their space in the grand final, however a youthful Griffith side beat them by one point in extra time.
In just his first year with the Rams, Tua Tulaga claimed the club’s best and fairest award.
Fitzgerald said he was a powerful runner with the ball and solid in defence with young players looking to him for leadership on the field.
An injury put paid to Peter Havrlant’s season, but it didn’t stop him from being involved.
Fitzgerald said Havrlant switched to looking after the club’s paperwork and administrative duties – earning the Clubman of the Year award.
“Getting people to do the work is the hardest part of the job,” Fitzgerald said.
The evergreen Daryn Deacon was awarded the coach’s award.
Even though he didn’t play a full season, Deacon was the Rams’ highest point scorer, and ranked equally with the team’s best back – Liam Hickman, another first year player with the team.
Forward Tom Finucane was suspended a few days before the grand final, but he was recognised as the team’s best over the season.
“He comes from Milbrulong, it’s his first year and he players second-row,” Fitzgerald said.
“He’s an extremely strong runner.”
Fitzgerald said the number of first year players in the awards list boded well for the club and hoped to see them claim the premiership in 2016 for the third time since their return to competition.
