Not only did Junee win the premiership but he scored two goals to be named man of the match.
Coming into the game the 34-year-old knew it was going to be his last and the 3-2 win over Henwood Park was the perfect finish.
“I wanted to retire and you can’t get much better than winning a comp, the first one in 40 years, for all the town’s people as they have been the ones waiting the longest,” Jones said.
After moving to Junee as a 14-year-old, Jones only spent one season away.
That was 13 years ago when he won a premiership with Henwood Park and he was thrilled to be able to deliver Junee the premiership they’ve waited so long for.
“I came back because of the township and the good people I’ve grown up with,” Jones said.
After making a promise to wife Lisa that no matter the result the grand final would be his last game, Jones is looking forward to spending more time with his family.
He was put under pressure early when given the responsibilities of taking the penalty after Hawks defender Matt Takats brought Adrian Merrigan down inside the box.
Seeing the ball find the left corner of the net was a relief.
“I’ve had a few this year which have all gone well and there was a bit of pressure but I was glad it went in,” Jones said.
After being gifted the first goal, Jones then connected with a corner kick to give his team a 2-0 lead to be a deserved man of the match.
“That was good and put us in a great position but it wasn’t over,” he said.
